Propelling tomorrow’s youth into a technological future

15th Street News

Dennis Gosnell, Assignment Editor

It is often said that the future is held in the hands of the youth, and for a country to thrive the youth of that nation must be educated and have the know-how to continue moving their nation forward. Miles Garcia, resident of Oklahoma and student at Rose State College, is one such youth.

The creationism controversy – a summary

Open Parachute

Here’s a great summary of the creationist controversy – their claims and why they don’t work. Presented by Eugenie Scott at A Celebration of Reason – 2012 Global Atheist Convention held in Melbourne last April

Eugenie Scott – Reason And Creationism.

I like that she spends much of the time talking about “creation science” and their geological arguments. Turns out these actually have more factual basis (as in making statements of fact that can be tested) than do the intelligent design people and their biological arguments. So I welcomed her change of emphasis.

I still strongly disagree with the way she presents the philosophy and methodology of science in terms of methodological and philosophical materialism and their differences. I think it is actually a poor argument because it plays into the religious apologist arguments for a “supernatural” world that they can ring-fenced against scientific investigation. But more of that…

Science tidbits for July 2, 2012

Teaching Sapiens

Lots of tidbits, lots of links, enough to make a few tidbytes, even (8 tidbits = 1 tidbyte).

Feathers may have been an early adaptation, perhaps even basal, of Saurischian dinosaurs (which includes therapod dinosaurs), appearing so early in the evolutionary tree that many therapod dinosaurs (if not most) may have had feathers. Saurischian dinosaurs are one of the two major orders of dinosaurs, the other being Ornithischia, both named for the structure of their pelvic bones. Saurischian dinos have a lizard like hipbone, while Ornithischia has a bird like hipbone. Interestingly, it is the Saurischian group that is thought to have given rise to birds.

What kind of feathers, though? There are eight feather types that are documented within modern and extinct birds, all the way back to feathered dinosaurs.

Feather evolution was broken down into the following stages by…

Microsoft Taking $6.2 Billion Charge, Lowers Online Services Growth Expectations

24/7 Wall St.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) disclosed that it will need to take a massive charge after the close on Monday. Before you hit the panic button here you really need to understand what the charge is about even though the figure is massive on the surface. The charge is a non-cash accounting charge, so it is not as though Microsoft is having to fork out $6.2 billion in cash. Still, when investors see a $6.2 billion charge it is not going to go unnoticed.

Steve Ballmer and friends will recognize a “non-cash, non-tax-deductible income statement charge for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2012 for the impairment of goodwill in its Online Services Division segment, mostly related to its 2007 aQuantive, Inc., acquisition.” In short, it is effectively a writedown of the company’s goodwill on the balance sheet (listed as almost $19.7 billion for the last quarter).

Microsoft noted…

Nintendo Says Wii U Will Have A Reasonable Price

My Nintendo News

Although Wii U will be released this year, Nintendo did not reveal the price of their upcoming console. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata acknowledges that the initial price-point of Nintendo 3DS “was considered relatively high by consumers,” and assured that Nintendo “won’t make the same mistake” with Wii U. Iwata promises that Wii U will have a reasonable price. What would be a reasonable price for Wii U?

What’s Important in the Financial World (6/26/2012)

24/7 Wall St.

Spain’s borrowing costs continued to be unsustainable a day after Moody’s downgraded 28 banks based there. The yield on three-month paper was 2.362%. It was 3.23% for six-month bonds. The rates were the result of Spain raising 3.08 billion euros today. Although Spain will get a bailout for its banks that may have a price tag as high as 100 billion euros, a rescue of the country itself is now all but assured. Spain’s deficit targets are unlikely to be met as a recession there deepens and there is no sign that unemployment will fall from 25%. The real estate market, at the core of bank write-offs, continues to collapse. The interest Spain pays will continue to rise until a bailout is firmly in place.

Shipper Prices Share Offering; Watch Shares Sink (EGLE, DRYS, EXM, GNK, DSX, FRO, NM, RBS, SAN)

24/7 Wall St.

Dry bulk shipper Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. (NASDAQ: EGLE) filed a Form S-3 with the SEC this morning announcing the sale of up to 3.15 million shares of common stock priced at $2.84. Shares closed at $3.14 last night, working out to a discount of nearly 10% for today’s offering.

Rising fuel costs and a slowing global economy has hit the dry bulk shippers hard. Cargoes of iron ore and coal have decreased, and day rates all but collapsed at one point. The Baltic Dry Index has recently come back to nearly 1,000, although that’s still very low, and fuel costs have moderated somewhat. Shippers like DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ: DRYS), Excel Maritime Carriers, Ltd. (NYSE: EXM), Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd. (NYSE: GNK), Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE: DSX), Frontline Ltd. (NYSE: FRO), and Navios Maritime Holdings Inc. (
